For many gardeners, fall signals the end to a growing season full of blooms and delicious harvests, but it doesn’t have to be the end. Fall is the most wonderful time for gardening! Cooler temperatures mean less pests, less watering, and overall less work with continuing rewards.

You may think that since the last frost date in your area is fast approaching that you are out of time to plant any more vegetables this season – WRONG! There are many crops that love cooler (and even downright cold) weather.

Your growing season may differ, but here in zone 6b there are many crops that are perfect for fall and winter growing. If you are unsure of your zone, please visit the USDA website for more information.

Last year for example, was an incredibly cold year starting in October for us. Our horseradish and rhubarb died down to the ground, but came back this spring like champs with no protection through the winter. As for brussels sprouts, we had plants that came through subzero temperatures with NO frost protection like champs!

Yes, lettuce is listed twice, but CAN be very tender depending on the variety you choose. We had romaine lettuce that did great last year with a simple row cover, but the buttercrunch withered and came back early spring. The same goes for spinach, choose your varieties carefully; we’ve grow Bloomsdale Long Standing spinach successfully through the winter.

Fall and winter are so often a sad time for gardeners, but it shouldn’t be. It is absolutely wonderful to be able to walk out to the garden in the dead of winter and harvest garden fresh vegetables for delicious soups and savory roasts! Here’s to keeping the gardens going – happy planting!
