Dehydrating Bananas

It really is handy to have snacks on hand that aren’t loaded with sugar and bananas are SO darn cheap, we always get at least 2-3 bundles at a time. When the kids aren’t gobbling up fresh bananas, they love banana chips (and I love that they don’t make a sticky toddler mess like fresh bananas do).
Banana chips are so easy to make even the kids can help – they can even help cut because bananas can be sliced with a butter knife. You can also grab these super nifty kid “safe” knives on Amazon!

How to Dehydrate Bananas

Step 1: Peel bananas (I know, but some people follow directions to the “T”).

Step 2: Slice bananas 1/8” thick (some of ours ended up ¼’, it’s fine)

Step 3: Fill a bowl with 4 cups water and 2 Tbsp lemon juice (you could use vinegar instead, but I don’t).

Step 4: Soak bananas in acid (lemon) solution (a minute or two does the trick). This will keep the bananas from browning. I make sure I split the clumps up so the slices all get exposed to the juice.

Step 5: Place bananas on dehydrator at 135˚F for 8-12 hours, or until they snap when cool.

Store in an airtight container, like a mason jar, for longer storage. We tend to eat them quickly, so I just keep them in freezer Ziploc bags.

Banana chips really are such a simple, healthy snack. They are so fast I can get them going while the kids eat their breakfast!
